As long as plants and fungi exist, there is hope. With two and five plants estimated to be at risk of extinction, RBG Kew’s efforts to stem biodiversity loss are more urgent than ever.
Kew Gardens have been at the forefront of cataloguing, protecting and researching plant life on this planet for 260 years. Its mission is to protect global plant and fungal biodiversity for the benefit of our planet and for the benefit of humanity.
Kew scientists are looking at how plants and fungi might offer solutions to those challenges and contribute to cleaning the air we breathe, providing the food we eat, the medicines we need, the energy we use, the clothes we wear and the materials we work with.
Through its world-class research, collections of preserved specimens, including the Millennium Seed Bank and the diverse plants and fungi growing in its gardens at Kew and Wakehurst, scientists and horticulturists are discovering long-term solutions to protect and restore natural habitats. You are under no obligation to leave a gift to The Foundation and Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in your free will, but any amount, however large or small, will help protect Kew's beautiful gardens and the planet for future generations.
